Men’s Skin Care – A Gift for Your Favorite Guy

If you’re like a lot of women I know, you have a perennial problem: Gift ideas for men can be hard to find. Ties, tools, gadgets – there’s only so many times you can go there! Want to think outside the box? Well, if you’re taking good care of your skin, why not give the guy in your life the same? Birthdays, holidays, Father’s Day, Valentine’s Day, think skin care products – or think bigger, and spring for a cosmetic dermatology treatment! You have a wide range of choices for the man in your life.

But first, let’s get one thing out of the way. Times have changed. Men are finally catching up with women in getting this important truth: It’s OK to want to feel good about how you look! We’re not just talking about that current cliché, the “metrosexual” – though of course the downtown, corporate male professional certainly knows a well-groomed appearance gives him the edge. No, it’s becoming the norm for all kinds of men to be more conscious of the impression their appearance makes. Besides, who doesn’t want to take care of their skin, for health and comfort?

Now that we can all agree that microdermabrasion or a laser treatment doesn’t pose a threat to anyone’s gender identity, let’s take a look at some of the possibilities. Men have some special skin care challenges – and some of the very same concerns as their female friends.

One special challenge is shaving. For men this can cause ingrown hairs, which can be really painful, especially on the neck. Laser hair removal is an excellent solution, so if your guy suffers from this nuisance, a series of laser treatments would make a great gift. Lasers use pulses of light energy that targets the pigment in darker and coarser hair follicles, and destroys them. Unlike other methods, laser hair removal is painless, with no unpleasant side effects like scarring. Relief at last from those collars that chafe the ingrown hairs!

And then, something we all share, aging. Is there a man in your life whose skin is showing the years? Maybe it’s your dad, maybe it’s your life partner – but have no doubt, men aren’t any happier about sagging skin and age spots than women are! (As a cosmetic dermatologist, I hear about it – and you know I try the procedures and products on my own aging skin, too. I love the results, and the compliments!)

I have to recommend Fraxel laser treatments to repair and refresh aging or sun-damaged skin – it’s simply the best procedure out there. Be sure you ask for the genuine, latest-generation Fraxel laser, and choose a cosmetic dermatologist whose professional staff is trained in its use. This updated laser treatment targets damaged collagen cells in the middle skin layer, leaving the upper layer intact. It fades discoloration, shrinks enlarged pores, smoothes fine wrinkles – and stimulates healthy cells to produce new collagen, tightening and toning the skin. Or, for skin dulled by a layer of excess dead skin cells, microdermabrasion can uncover an energetic, youthful radiance.

One final word: Botox® Cosmetic. It’s not just for women, and a lot of men already know it! Botox is safe and effective (you’ll want to be sure to work through a board-certified cosmetic dermatologist and be sure you’re getting the genuine product, manufactured exclusively by Allergan, a legitimate and reputable pharmaceutical company). This approved, purified form of the drug Botulinum toxin actually relaxes muscles when injected directly into them, targeting the problem area with no effects beyond a few millimeters around the injection site. Results are outstanding. Gone are the scowl and squint lines that make him look old!

So now that men are giving themselves permission to take care of themselves, the women who love them have a new range of gifting options. Why not give men’s skin care, to show you care?

Resveratrol and Anti-Aging

The fountain of youth has been sought for centuries as people imagine living longer lifespans. Youthful looks are big business, too with cosmetic surgeries taking in a nip here and a tuck there, smoothing out lines and wrinkles. Now imagine you could eat or drink something and you could retain your youthful looks for a lot longer.

Well, recent scientific studies have shown that a simple compound found in red wine can enhance the way you feel, improve your appearance and even lengthen your life, all without any negative side effects. The legendary fountain of youth is not a fountain at all but a food. Studies done by the Mayo clinic and Harvard University have shown that a component found in grapes, seeds, raspberries, blueberries, cranberries, peanuts, certain Chinese and Japanese herbs and red wine, called resveratrol, can increase lifespan, improve health and quality of life well beyond the common statistics.

In the late 1980’s, researchers at the Universities of California at Irvine and San Francisco, along with researchers at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology discovered what came to be known as the survival gene. Laboratory mice were found to have a set of genes that protected their cells from free radical damage and cell death after the cells reproduced. One gene was found to affect the rate of aging.

Advance time by 20 years to Harvard University, where Joseph Baur, Ph.D., and David Sinclair, Ph.D., found that resveratrol had some remarkable actions on the survival gene. Resveratrol had powerful antioxidant action that protected, activated and nourished it.

With resveratrol in your body, you will find sick or malformed cells will literally shut down and turn off, which is great news for tumor and abnormal growth. Resveratrol affects the survival gene in such a way that it protects healthy cells and keeps them living longer, while getting rid of cells to which it cannot stimulate repair. If damaged cells cannot be restored to their original vitality, the survival gene takes them out. At the same time, healthy cells become stronger and live longer with the possibility you could live decades longer. Senior health concerns can become much less of a concern.

Joseph Maroon, MD., wrote a book called The Longevity Factor: How Resveratrol And Red Wine Activate Genes For A Longer And Healthier Life. In it he says that in the US, life expectancy is approximately 77 years. The history that he reports is that in the 1780’s, most people lived for about 35 years before succumbing to pneumonia, Crohn’s disease, TB or chronic diarrhea. In the last 200 years, we have made huge advances in infection control, nutrition, medicine and even accident prevention. Maroon points out though, that we have huge and increasing numbers of toxic chemicals, poisons, pesticides and superbugs in our environment that affect us in many ways.

These substances are so foreign to our nature that they invade our bodies, sometimes through the very food we eat. This invasion can kill our body’s trillions of disease-fighting cells – our immune system, by poisoning it or by sheer numbers alone. Whatever the invading force is, the end result is free radical damage or even cell death. When enough cells die and cannot replace themselves fast enough, we die. Our life ends.

Cynthia Kenyon is the Director of the Hillblom Center For The Biology Of Aging in San Francisco, at the University of California. In agreement with Maroon, she states “If you understand the mechanisms of keeping things repaired, you could keep things going on indefinitely.”

With resveratrol, life expectancy extension is now a very real possibility. As a powerful antioxidant, the protection and repair capacity of resveratrol is amazing. The most common place to find resveratrol is in grape skins which translates into red wine. You can ingest resveratrol by drinking red wine, but sometimes that is not practical. You can all get high quality resveratrol by taking supplements. You can google it or use the one that I find the best. You can find the link on my website at the bottom of the page. It’s time to turn back the clock and feel better than you have for ages.
