The fountain of youth has been sought for centuries as people imagine living longer lifespans. Youthful looks are big business, too with cosmetic surgeries taking in a nip here and a tuck there, smoothing out lines and wrinkles. Now imagine you could eat or drink something and you could retain your youthful looks for a lot longer.
Well, recent scientific studies have shown that a simple compound found in red wine can enhance the way you feel, improve your appearance and even lengthen your life, all without any negative side effects. The legendary fountain of youth is not a fountain at all but a food. Studies done by the Mayo clinic and Harvard University have shown that a component found in grapes, seeds, raspberries, blueberries, cranberries, peanuts, certain Chinese and Japanese herbs and red wine, called resveratrol, can increase lifespan, improve health and quality of life well beyond the common statistics.
In the late 1980’s, researchers at the Universities of California at Irvine and San Francisco, along with researchers at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology discovered what came to be known as the survival gene. Laboratory mice were found to have a set of genes that protected their cells from free radical damage and cell death after the cells reproduced. One gene was found to affect the rate of aging.
Advance time by 20 years to Harvard University, where Joseph Baur, Ph.D., and David Sinclair, Ph.D., found that resveratrol had some remarkable actions on the survival gene. Resveratrol had powerful antioxidant action that protected, activated and nourished it.
With resveratrol in your body, you will find sick or malformed cells will literally shut down and turn off, which is great news for tumor and abnormal growth. Resveratrol affects the survival gene in such a way that it protects healthy cells and keeps them living longer, while getting rid of cells to which it cannot stimulate repair. If damaged cells cannot be restored to their original vitality, the survival gene takes them out. At the same time, healthy cells become stronger and live longer with the possibility you could live decades longer. Senior health concerns can become much less of a concern.
Joseph Maroon, MD., wrote a book called The Longevity Factor: How Resveratrol And Red Wine Activate Genes For A Longer And Healthier Life. In it he says that in the US, life expectancy is approximately 77 years. The history that he reports is that in the 1780’s, most people lived for about 35 years before succumbing to pneumonia, Crohn’s disease, TB or chronic diarrhea. In the last 200 years, we have made huge advances in infection control, nutrition, medicine and even accident prevention. Maroon points out though, that we have huge and increasing numbers of toxic chemicals, poisons, pesticides and superbugs in our environment that affect us in many ways.
These substances are so foreign to our nature that they invade our bodies, sometimes through the very food we eat. This invasion can kill our body’s trillions of disease-fighting cells – our immune system, by poisoning it or by sheer numbers alone. Whatever the invading force is, the end result is free radical damage or even cell death. When enough cells die and cannot replace themselves fast enough, we die. Our life ends.
Cynthia Kenyon is the Director of the Hillblom Center For The Biology Of Aging in San Francisco, at the University of California. In agreement with Maroon, she states “If you understand the mechanisms of keeping things repaired, you could keep things going on indefinitely.”
With resveratrol, life expectancy extension is now a very real possibility. As a powerful antioxidant, the protection and repair capacity of resveratrol is amazing. The most common place to find resveratrol is in grape skins which translates into red wine. You can ingest resveratrol by drinking red wine, but sometimes that is not practical. You can all get high quality resveratrol by taking supplements. You can google it or use the one that I find the best. You can find the link on my website at the bottom of the page. It’s time to turn back the clock and feel better than you have for ages.
